Why cost per engagement is the best single metric for influencer deals

CPE cuts through two of the most commonly inflated metrics in influencer marketing: follower count and post rate. A creator with 200K followers charging $2,000 per post may have a CPE of $0.80 if their engagement rate is poor. A creator with 30K followers charging $300 may have a CPE of $0.14. CPE is the number that tells you which deal is actually worth more.

CPE = Total creator fee ÷ Total expected engagements
Expected engagements = Followers x Engagement rate

CPE versus CPA: which metric matters more?

CPE tells you the efficiency of reach into an engaged audience. CPA (cost per acquisition) tells you the efficiency of converting that engagement into revenue. CPE is the input metric you can calculate before the campaign. CPA is the output metric you measure after. Use CPE to evaluate and select creators. Use CPA to evaluate the campaign overall.

When a high CPE is acceptable

A finance or health creator with a CPE of $0.80 who converts at 5x the rate of a lifestyle creator at $0.18 CPE is still the better buy on a CPA basis. Niche, audience intent and trust level all affect conversion rate independently of engagement rate. CPE is the starting benchmark not the final answer.

For Instagram micro influencers (10K-100K followers) a good CPE is $0.18-$0.35. Below $0.20 is excellent. Above $0.50 for a micro influencer warrants negotiation. Nano influencers deliver $0.08-$0.20 CPE which is the most cost-efficient tier for engagement-focused campaigns.
Divide the total creator fee by the expected total engagements. Expected engagements equals follower count multiplied by engagement rate divided by 100. Example: $500 fee for a 50K creator with 4.2% engagement rate equals $500 divided by 2,100 engagements which equals $0.24 CPE.
CPE is more relevant for conversion-focused campaigns because engagements signal audience intent. CPM is more relevant for awareness campaigns where raw impressions matter. Most experienced brand marketers use both: CPM to benchmark media value and CPE to evaluate creator quality.
